Nowadays, the astute, serious breeder is much more selective about alpaca herdsires (machos) chosen for their breeding programmes. They are selecting conformationally correct herdsires with finer fiber, low consistency of variation and higher fleece weights. The higher quality of fleece results in a higher quality of end product and therefore demands a higher end value which is what this industry is all about.
